Social Media Safety, Privacy & Security
They say the Internet is anonymous right? Well, not exactly and if you have teens or pre-teens at home you might be very surprised by some of the unknown information freely flowing from those high speed connections and hand held devices. Oh and by the way, it’s not only the teens we need worry about in these days of iPhone, Android, iPads right?
It’s surprising, but we still get asked about this sort of thing regularly and while it seems consumers are finally becoming more and more aware of the potential risk factors out there it is nothing short of amazing what we still see on the likes of Facebook every day. So, to that end, we have put together a little info. straight from the experts for you…
The following is an excerpt from an excellent workshop given at last summers Social Media Camp in Victoria, BC given by Personal Protection Systems Inc in Victoria ( personalprotectionsystems.ca ).
Session Title: Social Media Security and Safety: How To Protect Yourself From The Cyber Criminal
Extract: As Social Media grows ever more popular and essential, we find ourselves conducting most of our personal and private business online. We use the Internet to conduct commerce, shop, pay bills, and manage bank accounts. We will increasingly rely on the electronic exchange of personal information as Social Media continues to evolve and become even more consumer friendly. Subsequently, criminals will also evolve, working day and night to find and exploit vulnerabilities within our Social Networks. These social engineering hackers will not sleep until they gain access to all of our information, which they can utilize to steal our identities or gain access to our financial accounts. If you are a user of Social Media, this seminar will provide attendees with systems to put into place to thwart a cyber criminal from determining you are the next target.

Darren and Beth have written over 70 published articles and four books on the topics of personal safety, one of those books “Total Awareness A Woman’s Safety Book” won a provincial award. Beth oversees and runs the company, while Darren facilitates all their programs, or as Beth jokingly says, “She’s the brains behind the company, and Darren is the brawn.”
Brandon Laur has been working with his father Darren for the past eight years teaching security awareness. Although young, many are surprised to his unique understanding of the internet, and realties of digital content. He observes the impact of how new technologies being produced every day are used by those who intend on circumventing weaknesses overlooked in order to con unaware users out of their money and identity. Brandon strives to spread his knowledge to the world in hopes of changing the standard mindless utilization of the technology to protect those who are unaware of how to protect themselves.
