One of the greatest gifts we’re blessed with in life is simply the ability to create something that didn’t exist before. Yet we don’t Why is that?
As Marketers, we have that tendency to just copy what has gone before or jump on the bandwagon of a good thing. “Holy, they got 500 Shares from that article? I gotta get me some of that!” There’s even experts out there that will tell you it’s perfectly okay to do so. But is it, really? Look around on the Social interwebs and you’ll invariably find much of the same old regurgitated material popping up time and again. So as a society and as business professionals have we just gotten lazy?
Maybe but if so, what can we do to fix it?
It’s fine to take a topic or blog post someone else has written and then reply to it or start a conversation with the author on its merits and his or her position on the subject. Even if it’s something you disagree with or feel has scraped the tip of a different iceberg. But why repeat the very same article just in your own words? We’ve already been there folks!
What is the point of repeating an article (passed off as your own) when it’s not original? Honestly, by so doing you are effectively telling your own followers, Oh sorry, I couldn’t be bothered to add anything new here today so I just copied this thing I found :) Oh and remember to Like me on Facebook? Yay you.
Originality in Marketing is a fairly rare commodity and the nature of the industry itself is one prone to copy cat tendencies. Inevitably, once you hit on a good thing it’s pretty well guaranteed you will soon see it duplicated on every social interweb there is – and normally within a few days. Sad, yes but true.
You may as well title a Post “I don’t have anything to say today – part 1” (beacuse we know there’ll be a part 2…) and tag it with the likes of Vague, Nothingnew, Blah blah… At the very least you will be honest and sincere :) No takers? Really??
As a blogger, I feel much of the reason for this overload of junk (yes, junk) is that we have become too demanding on our own blog schedules. While it’s true that anyone can write-up a quick 300 words on a topic – should you if you don’t have anything worthwhile to write? Really? Just because there is a Post button staring you in the face on Facebook does not mean you have to press it. Peer pressure? Just say no! Please!!
If we look around on the web or read any number of SEO articles out there, often we’re advised to keep pumping out regular content in order to boost your overall credibility and give you more fodder for the search engines. My thought on this is very simple – that philosophy will only work if you have great content that’s actually worth indexing and ranking. If only Googlebot had a Meh button rather than just a +1 but I digress…
Sometimes, as Marketers and as Business people, we just have to be okay with saying, No not today.
What about you ?
